• Piggy
o Fat, Asthmatic boy who wears glasses
o He wears grubby and greasy clothing
Michael - Piggy is the scapegoat of all the boys. Even when he holds the conch he cannot be heard and /or listened to
William-Piggy represents innocence because he seems like he does not have any ill intentions. He is always being picked on and never tries to get revenge. He also represents civilization. He is over-dressed, wears glasses, has asthma, and diarrhea. These are all things that come from civilization. The book also says that he has eaten fruit. When Adam and Eve ate fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil they understood things that they hadn’t before, causing them to wear clothes and do other things differently, it made them more “civil.” So, when the book tells us that Piggy has eaten fruit, it is essentially telling us that Piggy depends on civilization. Golding says that everyone’s hair has grown except for Piggy’s, and in this book long hair symbolizes the uncivilized life of savages, and short hair (like Piggy’s) symbolizes civilization. when Piggy is killed it shows that all order on the island is gone and they have turned into savages.
Ralph
Ralph- Fair hair and is sweating. He gets up from crash. He walks with some purpose. Has his school clothes on still. He doesn’t seem to like Piggy also he realizes that there are no adults around first. Hmmm he takes off clothing they weigh him down. 12 years old. Athletic. He is optimistic and care free. A leader yet to come. He has awarded a position and now has changed. He has compassion, even a touch. He wants to believe that this island is just a big game and the idea of a monster on this island frightens him and he will do anything to go back to blissful ignorance and have fantasy world. He has trouble saying things instead he uses actions to say what he wants to say for example he stands on his head to show that he is excited. He really does not seem that smart and does not seem like he would make a good leader i think that the kids elected him as leader because he seems to have a certain eloquence to him. He is pleasing to the eye so since the kids do not really know anyone they choose the person who looks the "best".
Ralph's father is navy, Why is this important?
Ralph and Jack are at the top of the hierarchy
Jack
Jack Merridew: The leader of a boy choir. He “controls them” he dresses in black and is signified as leader through golden badge he wears. He shows contempt for Ralph, and out right insults Piggy. He is arrogant
Jack:
a) Arrogant
b) Bully
c) Controlling
d) Freckles
e) Red hair
f) Skinny
g) Blue eyes
h) Ugly
i) Wants to be in charge
j) See himself as an adult
k) Mind is set on what he wants
l) Thinks he is always right
Simon
He is a person in the choir, who often faints. When everyone is supposed to help Piggy make huts, he is the only who helps while they others goof around. Also there is a part in the book where Simon stands up for Piggy. Simon's loyalty is split between both Jack and Ralph. When Ralph chooses the group to explore the island, he chooses Simon to be in between Jack and himself. In the book, he symbolizes both the part of the super ego that is conciseness, and Jesus. He is like Jesus because, he is a very dependable character whom is always helping out the littl'uns when they are trying to fruit.
He is one of the people in the choir. He likes to be alone a lot (wanders into the jungle). He also is a very dependable person, in terms of helping the over group of boys (huts).
Simon: Younger than Ralph and Jack and full of ideas. He is the equivalent of Piggy. He is a small, skinny boy with long black hair.
He seems to be the buffer between Ralph and Jack.
Roger
Samneric
Sam and Eric: The two twins in the book that are always together and in chapter 4 they are chanting about killing a pig on the first time. They are very young and don't feel guilt or remorse and even when Ralph couldn't do it the first time. the two are very care free and don't worry about being saved and are having fun. Samneric are the only twins on the island and i think that they represnt innocence along with all of the other littluns. they represent the part of the mind that does what it wants to do. Samneric are important to the book because they are the only ones that stay in Ralph and Piggy's tribe because they don't want to lose their innocence in a sense.
