Agree or disagree (or both) with the following statements.
Upstanders are just like us
Basil Anderson: I think that everyone is an up stander weather they know it or not. Everyone has good qualities about them and weather you choose to use them or not is the question. Rhys Athayde:
Everyone is an upstander. It is up to them, however, to act on what they believe in. In my opinion, an upstander is a person who believes in something and expresses their opinion. I completely agree with you Theo. I think that you hit the nail right on the head. You too Ben. We are all upstanders, however, it is our actions that speak louder than our words. If you just engage yourself in a conversation, it might do something, but if you "Be the Change," than something can be accomplished more efficiently and quickly.
Henry's response: I think that up standers are like some of us because some people will stand up for what they think is right and that is the quality of a up stander. Theo I think the same way because some one can be one or the both and they can decide what they are.
Theophilus: Yes I think that up standers are just like us because every person is an upstander whether they choose to act on that quailty will determine whether or not they are up standers.
Jared: Theo, I definitely agree with you on what your saying. I agree because it's the same thing for the amount of "good" and "evil" inside a person. Everyone can be an upstander, but someone can also be a downsitter, and vice versa someone can be good or bad. But I think that it depends upon how someone was brought up, whether they were brought up to be passive and to not get involved with big issues, or if they were taught to always stand up for what you believe in and always try to make a difference.
Ben: I totally agree about what you said Theo and in my response i think what i said had the same basic idea. I think that your idea was well explained and i think your input gave me a more clear idea about the question.
Mr. Cohen; Theo, this is interesting. It sounds as if you think that everyone has an upstander inside of him or her just waiting to be released. Is that what you mean? If it is, what do you think helps bring out the upstander in someone?
Theophilus: Mr. Cohen I think that when someone is put in a position where they see something is wrong and are totally dead set against it they will hopefully find the courage to stand up for what is right, what they believe is right. An situation where people are put in a position that makes them want to do the right thing is when someone sees their friend being bullied most true friends will find the courage to go and stand up for their friend and defend them and when they do this they tap in to the big vat upstanderedism that exist within every persons character.
Ben: Do i think that upstanders are like us, no, i think they are not like us, they are us. We all are upstanders, you don't have to go and try to be an upstander it happens. It is human nature to stop someone from hurting or insulting another human. I believe that our brains recognize the situation process it and realize that we would not want to be in a bad situation so we try our best to stop it.
Eliezer: I think that you were not born being an upstander but, you had the choice to gradually become an upstander.
Jarrad: As everybody else said, you have the opportunity to become an upstander. When I was learning about "Be The Change," I saw that Vanita voluntarily switched from a lawyer, to an activist who helps other people. By being lawyer you help people in court, but only because that person hired you and your getting paid. Vanita helps other people willingly without any reward.
William: I think that we all have the potential to be upstanders, so, yes upstanders are just like us.
It is more important for people to make a difference in their own communities, with people most like them, than outside their communities.
Jeancarlo's Response: I think that it depends on where you live in order to make a difference. If you live in an almost "perfect" society then you will always want to improve others. If you live in a horrible oppressing society; then you will want to only change your own.
Theophilus: It is more important for people to make a difference in their society because by doing so they can see whether or not they are even capable organizing enough people and rallying them to get some kind of change created. If one can make a change in their community that still doesn't mean that they are capable making big changes in the world. If they make small changes and fail it wouldn't be as bad as if they tried make big changes and fell apart because they lacked organization and a foundation.
Henry: I believe that people if they ever want to change something big, they should start small and begin to start on their community and from there build up and strive toward greater goals in other communities and then gradually step forward.
Eliezer: I believe that you can and should make a difference no matter what community you are in. People should help others even if it will not benefit them or their own community, because you know that in the long run, you are helping people.
William: It depends on where you are; for instance, it is more important to help others if you are well off. However if you have trouble getting by every day then you should be helping yourself or your own community.
Rhys Athayde:
If a new student arrives at Allen-Stevenson, and starts telling us what to do, when to do it, and how to do it, ultimately, we will not listen to that person and shun that person. It helps when you are an upstander in your own community because people already know you and are willing to consider your opinions.
You should only stand up when you think you can be successful.
Rhys Athayde:
I believe that this statement can be justified in many different ways. You can always stand up for what you believe in even though you may not be successful. Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth president, tried to stop slavery but failed. Nevertheless, he strived for success and eventually things changed. Just because change does not happen today, doesn't mean it can't happen tomorrow. Just because you may not be a success today, does not mean that you will not be a success tomorrow.
Jeancarlo's Response: I believe this may vary in some cases. It depends on the personality. If someone is insecure; then that means they would most likely follow this statement. If they were confident and outgoing, then they would follow whatever they believe in and oppose this statement.
henry's response: This is blatantly wrong! you should stand for whatever you thing is good or right no matter what the outcome could be.
Jared: No this is blatantly wrong. If this were true, then there would be no changes in the world. We would still be under the rule of the British, we would be catholics etc. In order for there to be change, you have to know that there will not always be success. In order to be successful you have to take chances, and even if you dont think that you will be successful you should always try because one never knows when something good will come from standing up when in doubt.
Ben: Jared, i think that what you said is completely true and i love your examples. After looking at the question i had the same answer as you, but then when i looked at your answer the answer to this question became much more clear to me.
Jarrad: What Jared said is completely true. If nobody stands up for anything nothing will change. My parents tell me that no matter what I do, leave the world a better place, even if its a minuscule action, or to help someone in need. Donating fifty dollars to Darfur would be an example of a small action. For something to be successful you need to make it be successful. In every situation there is a chance that it will fail but theres a chance it will succeed. If nobody has the courage to stand up for what they think is right there will definitely not be any changes in world.
William: i think that this is true because if you want something to change you shouldn't just wait for it to happen, you strive to achieve it. However i don't think you should be to brash and argue against anything (Daniel Evangelakos) you should choose your battles wisely. this includes student council.
Eliezer: I believe that iff you dont think you can make a difference, then you are not really trying and it is not an important matter to you. You should be able to stand up for something only if you really believe that you can do it and not base it on what other people believe.
