Some excellent ideas today from the group!!

1.) The picture above shows the sandwhich effect. In the beginning of chapter 3 Jack is on all fours in the forest hunting the pig for meat. In the middle the other characters are on the beach and in the end of the story (at the right) Golding has Simmon venture into the forest and discovers his own quiet place.
2.) In the chapter there is alot of contrast between the two characters Simmon and Jack. When Jack is in the forest, his main goal is to hunt and kill the pig for food (on all fours, showing rapidly becoming one with the forest). While he is hunting his surrounding is dark and the creepers are above him as if trying to grab at him. Simmon on the other hand is sitting in a peaceful quiet place that is filled with butterflies and candle flowers. His surrounding is full of light images and the creepers are below him.
3.) Could it be possible that both he and Piggy will be the only ones to suffer as the story progresses, due to their un-ablity to become one with the forest like most of the other characters or will they eventually face the fact that it would be the only way to survive?
4.) Darwin: Survival of the fittest can be applied to the story. Those who are weak and are unable to adapt to the change in enviornment die out. Only the strong can survive

1.) In class we discussed the relevance of hair in the story. Ralph pushes his hair back as it grows longer. Does this show him trying to go back to being civil and trying to seperate himself from the forest.
2.) Piggy on the other hand doesnt have a problem becasue his hair isnt growing like the others. As a character throughout the story seems to be left behind on the beach with the little uns' all of the time. This raised the question of "what his real job on the island".
3.) A classmate stated that he is in charge of the littl uns' just like his aunt was with him.
4.) Ralph in the beginning stayed on the beach, but as the story progresses he starts going into the jungle more. So is it inevitable that you become one with the forest?
