This is a list of major characters from chapter 1 with some notable characteristics of each.
Notice that there are a handful of "older" boys: Jack, Simon, Ralph, Piggy. There are some very young boys like Johnny, the "littluns," and then there are some in the middle, such as Henry and Maurice.
"Red hair" is "*" because this means something in English society. It is considered a negative trait. Remember to watch the spelling of Sam and Eric's names as the book goes on.
When Golding refers to "the dark boy" that tells you that he's already mentioned him before; otherwise he would have said "a dark boy." This tells you that if you're not sure about why he is "dark" you know to check back earlier in the text.
"Furtive" means "secretive."
Annotations: These are two questions to ask about a text that help you form an interpretation. They are two different ways of thinking about the fact that nothing is in a text by accident, that authors include things for a reason. For example, why did Golding choose to have only boys on the island? He said that it was because he did not want sex to get in the way of the story that he wanted to tell which was how these boys made out on the island by themselves.
Annotations:
Ralph reveals to the group Piggy's nickname, in spite of Piggy asking him not to.
The boys can't form a group unless they exclude Piggy. He isn't just left out; he provides the way for them to be a unit.
Notice that once again Piggy is fiddling with his glasses.
Notice that the color pink is mentioned again. This time about Piggy.
