● Ralph doesn’t just take of his clothes he ripps them off. As if liberating self. Pg10
Weird author would set up the story using 2 characters that are rather different Piggy and Ralph.
“Looks through him” Piggy show how little thinks of piggy Ralph
Piggy so far is the idea man thinking of ways to pull them together. ● Laughter: it is big it is where Ralph can draw power and control the group. Ø Used to make piggy scapegoat and unite group Ø To disarm and ignore the complaints of a little boy about monsters. ● The creeper earlier a piglet was struggling in the creeper they could be evil or the monsters or “Beastie”? ●Ralph isn’t being a good leader. He is lying to the group although he himself knows that no one is probably coming. Yet he is living up to what a leader should do because he is trying to maintain peace.
● The problem in Government So far he has the loyalty of the children because promises will be rescued children are impatient they won’t wait forever. What happen if the rescuers don’t come or they take too long to come. The kids will lose faith in Ralph AND ULTIMATELY HE WILL BE OVER THROWN OR KICKED OUT OF POWER.
Mountain:
● Fire on a mountain it is screaming some kind of mythological scene and I don’t know what yet.
Beast
The beast is what introduces fear into the littl'uns. This beast is claimed to be spotted by the boy with the mulberry birthmark. This beastie is said to be a snake creature which alludes to genesis and the garden of Eden. It may symbolize the temptaion of knowledge of good and evil, and it is said to come out only at night. The night time is when primarily the evil things come out. In chapter 5, there is a meeting where the beast is considered a fake fear. Phil claims to have seen the beast. Near the end, the beast it claimed to have landed on the tip of the mountain. When Ralph and the others go up to the mountain, they see a parachuter and mistake him for the beast.
The beast is what strikes fear into the tribe. This fear is what breaks them down throughout the story. The beast is first encountered by the mulberry-marked boy, this boy disapears in the big fire. Eventually, the beast is mistaken for Simon, causing his death.
Conch
This shell has great power and it some how is filled with evil further personifies how island evil. It seems to begin to spread into Ralph. How he is described. :“His face dark with the violent pleasure” pg18 ● The conch is power: already it is established as the pivot for order and organization in this society. So Far Ralph made rule if u want to speak u will raise ur hand and will be given the conch so that you may speak in these meetings. ● Conch: It is already a symbol of power. Whoever gets to hold conch can speak. Also no one may interrupt the person holding the conch except for Ralph. Ø When piggy is holding the conch he speaks with authority and purpose. It like the conch changes him. It makes him into sort of a leader. Ø When he is holding the conch he can Battle Jack, not win but at least battle. ● This governments first flaw. There is no consequence
Fire
I think that over the last couple of chapters the fire has become a more prominent thing. It is very crucial to the boys getting rescued because it is really the only thing that shows that they are on an island. Basically the boys have to rely on this to get them rescued. I also think that when Ralph sees that the fire was let out in chapter 4 it is showing that he does not want to be on the island anymore, that he wants to be rescued and does not want to die on the island. It shows that because he gets very upset and defensive when the fire goes out. So i think that as the book goes on the significance of the fire will increase.
Hair
p.16 line 32 " Ralph pushed back his fair hair"
p.18 paragraph 3 " heads brown, fair, black, chesnut etc. The scene focuses on the boys hair colors.
Hair seems to be very important as the story progresses. We see it more and more.
1) WATCH OUR FOR HAIR PATTERNS
a) What does it mean when someone’s hair falls in his face/ pushes his hair back. Ralph is constantly "pushing his fair hair back"
i) He oftens pushes his hair back when he is distressed or worried*
The title of chapter 3 says it all. It seems the hair is the line between being civil, and being an animal, or a "caveman." (AHA!)
Ralph is the only person who seems to be complaning about hair.
Piggy is still fully dressed with the same hair (Hmm....)
Jack seems to have very wild hair, the longer it grows, the more with the island they become. The Island is evil.
Lord of the Flies
Piggy's Glasses
As we know, Piggy is the most intelligent of the group. It represents the power of science. We see how smart Piggy is when he uses this elaborate plan to retrieve the conchestablished for breaking rules.

shell. I think it also represents his rationality, because he is the only boy on the island who thinks about what will eventually happen to them. The rest of the boys are thinking of what's going on right now.--Jarrad
● Piggy’s Glasses: The birth of fire on this island. -- Theo
Piggy's glasses have a pink flare to the - pink imagery!!!
Piggy's glasses fog and show emotion. are the glasses alive like the island?
Piggy's glasses et snatched off his face so the boys can start a fire.
Piggy's glasses are smacked off of his face.
William-Piggy’s glasses represent the view of an innocent child on life. Piggy is constantly cleaning them because they get stained with the truth of the world, and whenever he is humiliated his glasses fog up. In chapter 4 one lens on his glasses break, showing that Piggy’s view on the world is changing for the worse. When Piggy's glasses are stolen by Jack it means that Piggy has lost his innocence because of all of the problems they are facing.
Dirt/Decay
If you look carefully at chapter one you see many images of "dead trees," "skull shaped coconuts." There is also a constant notion of loose and falling sand. If you also read in chapter two when they find the firewood all the dead wood is in a hole because the dirt was too weak to hold the tree up. This signifies an eventual uprooting of the society on the island. when Jack makes his own tribe the bond between the people of the tribe has decayed so much that it cant hold the society together.
Light/Dark
Shadows
William-Dark symbolizes fear and intimidation in the beginning of the book. At the first meeting the choir is intimidating because they are all wearing black robes and caps. However in chapter three dark becomes a symbol of calmness and soothing because everyone is getting sunburned and people are trying to build shelters to get out of the sun and into the shade. But then it switches back when they are reminded of the “beast,” because everyone becomes scared at night when it is dark.
