He was a character of a comic strip in which he is a Czech fish-peddlar. It was meant to depict an interpretation of Jewish life. It was more specifically geared towards adults and Jews. The comic was around from about 1910 until about 1930.

Bible Belt - Mr. Hornbeck says "Heavenly Hillsboro. The buckle on the Bible Belt." this essentially means that the town of Hillsboro is very fixated on the bible and approve of it word for word.

In the book, Meeker first saw the appraised Brady at a meeting. The term refers to large outdoor meetings which usually had music, concerts, lectures, speeches, plays, and campaigns. People often stayed in tents during these events.

Nicolaus Copernicus was born February 19th, 1473. And he died May 24th, 1543. He was the first astronomer to formulate a heliocentric cosmology saying that the earth was not at the center of the universe. Copernicus was a mathematician, astronomer, physician, quadrilingual polyglot, classical scholar, translator, artist,Catholic cleric, jurist, governor, military leader, diplomat and economist. Astronomy wasn't one of his major responsibilities, but astronomy was how Copernicus made his lasting effect on the world.

Coxey's Army was a protest led by unemployed workers during the second year of the four year depression from 1893-1896. It was lead by populist Jacob Coxey in Washington D.C. The target of the protest was to lobby the government to create jobs such as railroad workers and road workers, (construction jobs) etc.

A silent film actor, famous for his swashbuckling roles in Robin Hood, The Thief of Baghdad, and The Mark of Zorro. He co-founded the United Artists film studio (along with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Prickford, and D.W. Griffith). He was the first president of the Academy of Motion Pictures. He also conceived and hosted the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929.

Elijah is a heroic figure in the Jewish tradition. Every Passover, a special cup of wine is filled and placed at the Sedar Table for him. During the Sedar, the door is left open and everyone stands in order to let Elijah enter through and drink. A chair is also set aside for Elijah at every bris. At the end of Shabbat, the Jews sing about Elijah, hoping that he will arrive with the Messiah.

Famous Giant from the city of Gath. For 40 days he challenged the armies of Israel to send out a man to defeat him. David, a young shepherd boy came and fought him with a sling and 5 stones. David hit Goliath in the head with a stone and cut off his head and brought it back to Jerusalem.
Happy Hooligan
Happy Hooligan was an influential and popular early American comic strip by Frederick Burr Opper. The Happy Hooligan strip was the first comic strip that got major attention by the later popular comic Opper. The Happy Hooligan comic was first published with a Sunday strip on March 11, 1900 in the William Randolph Hearst newspapers. Happy Hooligan told the adventures of a well-meaning hobo who encountered a lot of misfortune.
Henry’s Lizzie
In Inherit the Wind, Henry's Lizzie refers to Henry Ford's Model T. It was the first car ever created and was produced from 1907-1927. The Model T had a major impact on transportation. Quote from text: Henry's Lizzie rattles into town. The previous line from the text is referring to Mr. Matthew Harrison Brady (prosecutor) arriving into town. With the exception of some people, most of Hillboro's inhabitants see Mr. Brady as a God.

Was born in Chicago, Illinois and was a famous satge and film actor. He attended the University of Chicago and studied Psychology and Philosophy, and worked his way up to becoming a professor at the university. Until an actor named Donald Robertson visited the school and recommended acting to Milton, who said yes. He then stopped teaching and joined Donald's theatre company and was able to tour the country performing at places such as New York City. After performing on broadway, Milton raised two children from two different women (who were actresses) and decided to act in movies with Paramount Pictures.
Montgomery Ward
Isaiah Thornton Montgomery lived in the Mongomery house. He was a former slave who later founded Mound Bayou, Mississippi with his brother 1887. Montgomery lived in the home from 1910 to 1924. It was declared a national landmark in 1976 and a Mississippi landmark in 2003.
Moorish- The Moors were Muslims that took control of the lands that we now know as Spain and Portugal in the 9th century. Their power was immense and evident throughout the years and felt clearly throughout in Europe and North Africa, until they were completely kicked out of Spain and Portugal by 1492.
Original Sin
President Wilson-
The President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. He brought the U.S. into WWI despite having campaigned with the slogan "he kept us out of the war." Also accomplished during his presidency were women's suffrage and the creation of the U.S.'s first draft.
Richard Lionheart-
Richard the Lionheart was the king of England from July of 1189 until he died in 1199. When he was only 16, Richard worked with his brothers to try to dethrone their father King Henry II but were no match for his powerful army. Richard, being the last one standing and refusing to fight his father face to face, asked for a pardon from the king. Soon after, he helped his father stop revolts until Richard's brothers plotted against him. However, Richard was able to crush them within the spand of two days. Because of his military leadership, he received the name "Richard the Lionheart."
