Jeancarlo: Mr. Cohen, can you please update the notes on the blog website? thankss!

What is the theme of Hornbeck's speech on on page 34? What is he saying about the trick that the world (ordinary people) have played on Brady?

Gonzos response: i think this means that all of hilsboro are not what brady stands for. Brady stood for the ordinary people and now the world has advanced itself and brady has none of the people he stood for.

s left Brady in the dark. He is no longer needed in the lives and thoughts of the ordinary people. They "gassed" his head, and made him believe that he would always be great. That he was the yesterday messiah, and that he was the ultimate authority who everyone had to report to. However the world has moved on to modern ideas and have become less and less like people who stick to traditions and religion.

Basil's Response: What I Think this speech means is the world has led Brady to believe that they would always be there. But they did not keep up to that promise and now none of them are there. The world has stepped up to things that are more up to date and no one believes in religion and tradition anymore.

Jeancarlo's Response: Modernization is the trick which has been played on Brady. The world has modernized and have expanded their minds and points of view; thus: new ideas have sprouted from this. People are now more open-minded and free to say what they please. Communication has influenced this a lot. It has given people to find new ways of thinking, from their backyards. Brady, through all of this, has not "modernized." As a human, he is supposed to adapt, but he has not. (Hmm...) Hornbeck realizes all of this, and is trying to show Rachel, Brady is alone. There are no more of those "ordinary people," except for this small town of Hillsboro.

Michael Regester's Response: What Hornbeck is saying is that the world is beoming modernized and soon Hillsboro is going to be left in the dark. These people that live in Hillsboro have to relize the reality that change in comming and embrace it otherwise there going to be left in to dust. There are things comming into Hillsboro that the people have never seen before like cars and such. the people need to open their eyes and relize this.

Theophilus Agbi's Response: This speech precedes another speech made by Henry Drummond. At one point just before the trial begins Drummond and Brady are speaking and Henry tells Brady that it is he who has stood still and Henry changed. At this point the idea that Brady has stood still has become a recurring pattern that would translate into theme that fits the black and white ideas of Hillsboro which is if you do not change the world will pass you by. This theme is essentially the trick that is being played upon Brady the world is modernizing the "ordinary" people no longer exist. The ordinary people once were the people who weren't so educated and quiet ignorant of technology and the world outside their own. But now the ordinary people have surpassed Brady and have risen to a new level of sophistication they are more aware of the world around them and even more connected. This is the trick that has been played on Brady while he was out trying to become president the common folk were out learning about the world. Essentially that is why Hillsboro is considered the stump in which he can yell from by using this case he can draw more attention to him and hopefully raise himself to the new level of ordinary people. Unfortunately in trying to bring attention to himself he has to tackle with Henry Drummond and in battling with him he ends up losing the last of the ordinary. Before the trial begins the people are all on Brady side but by the end of the first or second day most people are looking at the world differently and more thoughtfully and in doing so they begin to take the first steps in joining the other folks on the new level of ordinarinesass

Elliots repsonse: I beleive that this speech means that the towns people have come to a sort or relezation. A relezation of truth and knowledge. The people now are thinking outside the box and are stepping outside their comfort zones. People are leaving religion behind and stepping into the world of science. Once dumb, the people now are gaining knowledge and are smarter.

Ben's Response" I think that the theme of Hornbeck speech is "modernization" the people of Hillsboro have all been "modernized" except for Brady. Brady is true is to some may say "orthodox" beliefs. He is left behind from the modernization. I said one day in class that when you drive past the little sign that says "Welcome to Hillsboro" time stops. Time started up for most of the people except for Brady. When the whole Cates case was brought to Hillsboro modern invention were brought as well things like the car and the radio. People became smarter and like the book said "The boob was de-boobed".

William's Response: I think that Hornbeck is trying to say that Brady thinks that he is needed by the people and that he is favored, while really he is past his peak, and everyone has moved on leaving him to think that he is a very important person.
