What subject says, thinks, feels, does, or experiencesThe glasses are worn, and cleaned, by Piggy.
What observation reveals about the subjectI suspect the glasses serve as a metaphor, as Piggy
appears to see with clarity the intangible aspects of their
situation, and their long-term needs for survival.
(example from p.22: "what intelligence had been shown
was traceable to Piggy.")
33
Piggy cleans his glasses before he speaks in the assembly.
Piggy, already being a outcast, is uncomfortable and nervous
by public speaking, especially since he is addressing a group
that already doesn't respect him. Therefore, he is nervous.
And to calm himself, he cleans his glasses. This shows
that the device is like a coping mechanism for Piggy that
gives him the confidence to speak. This shows that the
object definitely is metaphorical.
40
The glasses are used to create fire.
To the kids, fire is vital because it is the only way for the kids
to contact people from the outside. Thus, fire represents
salvation. And the glasses are what create it. Therefore,
the glasses are essential in order for the boys to be saved.
Also, it is now a powerful object, since it is able to create
fire. This also shows that fire represents technology.
71-72
Jack hits Piggy, and one of the glasses's lens is broken.
This scene shows that in the battle between order, peace and
chaos, disorder, chaos is winning.
101
When the boys are talking about the beast, Piggy
wipes his damaged glasses.
This once again is a way for Piggy to cope with the chaos that
is going on around him. But this also says something about
the boys in general. Because damaged glasses implies poor
vision, and this occurs when the boys are talking about the
beast. This shows that the beast is a result of poor vision,
which taken a step further says that fear is a result of
ignorance.
Note: The glasses do not appear in Chapter 7: Shadows
and Tall Trees.
124
When Ralph talks about seeing the beast, Piggy wipes his
damaged glasses.
Look at the observations made at page 101.
130
For the first time, Piggy uses his glasses to make a fire.
Again this shows what the glasses represents. Piggy is the
smartest, most logical and scientific in the group, and the
glasses are able to make fire (making it a very powerful item),
so the glasses must represent the power that science has
on society. And what is the product of science used to benefit
aid society: technology
147
Piggy gets angry at Ralph at splashing water at him because
he says that if the glasses get wet, he has to clean them
again.
Once again, Piggy is protective over the glasses and doesn't
want them to be tampered. This shows the closeness
between the two symbols: Piggy (intelligence/logic) and the
glasses (technology). And who Piggy cares about the glasses
being clean, understanding that dirty glasses cause poor vision.
And poor vision causes misinterpretation, ignorance, etc. Thus,
the quality of the glasses can also be a metaphor of the quality
of the group, and if it has poor vision or good vision. And
sensing from the number of times Piggy cleans them, it is
probably poor vision, meaning that society overall is lost in
ignorance.
168
Jack and his gang attack Piggy and take his glasses.
This scene shows a couple of things about the glasses. One
is that since Jack and his gang want it to make fire, it is a
powerful object that can be used for good (creating a signal so
the kids can be rescued) or bad (creating a cooking fire). Two
is that since Jack and his gang have it, technology is now
in the hands of savages. Three, now that Jack's group have
the glasses and Ralph's don't, Ralph's group is now powerless.
169-173
Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric go to Castle Rock and demand
for the return of the glasses.
This shows once again the power of the glasses, and the
struggle between savagery and civility to attain it.
