They did not think of the forest as a happy place.

Forest is a obstacle between the two boys and their lost acquaintances.

I think this is a important quote because the wood is used in order to create a fire and the fire represents the boys connection to society. Yet the forest represents the separation between the boys and society so I find it ironic that you find what you need to to create the fire in the forest.

In this context, when they say that's how the forest it can make you feel, they are talking about the isolation aspect of it, as well as it being separate from civilization and society.
